Basavakalyan

Audio guide

Welcome to Basavakalyan. In the twelfth century this town, then called Kalyana, was where Basavanna lived and worked. He gathered thinkers and saints called Sharanas in the Anubhava Mantapa, where people of every background spoke as equals about work, devotion and social justice, and wrote the vachanas in simple Kannada. Today Basavakalyan has many places linked to the Sharanas, a giant statue of Basavanna, and an old fort. It is a pilgrimage for many and a place of pride for all of Karnataka.
